01/12/2011- Project Question
What is the prominent parent type in Tibetan families located in McLeod Ganj, and does this parenting type fit into a category described by Baumrind, or is it something completely different?
Notes on development: This may be one of the hardest assignments I've had since I came to BYU, not because of an intimidating length requirement or a strict grading rubric, but because it requires me to be decisive and really take responsibility for my project and my learning. Although this is the question I'm proposing now, and it's really getting warmer to what I am really after, I feel as if it isn't quite there yet and I'll need to make revisions.
Here are some points that might eventually change my question:
-I'm really interested in finding out if parenting styles are different between families who have been settled for a good amount of time (say, 10 years) vs. families who have recently settled in the area (say less than 5 years). Should I focus only on this?
-I don't want this to be a comparative study between families in the location and families stateside, that's why I'm hesitant to study according to Baumrind's theory. However, Baumrind's theory has been cross-culturally analyzed and the findings are very similar. Should I still plan on comparing my findings to Baumrind's theory or drop it completely?
All-in-all, I'm satisfied with my question for now, and am looking for feedback to help me further develop and revise it.
